Nusa Penida Island is one of the small islands that located just off the coast of Bali. This island is included in the administrative area of the District of Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali. The island is very famous because of the natural beauty and its local’s life. Starting from the beautiful landscape of the hills, local dry land farming, natural springs, local activities, culture and history, crystal clear water at the coastal, healthy sea-water condition and rich marine ecosystems.

From another point of view, the island is also covered with thick spiritual nuances. It can be observed, either directly or indirectly, related the existence of holy place scattered at several location on this island. Among the Holy Places or Temple in Nusa Penida, several of them are visited by spiritual lovers more frequently than the other includes: Pura Puncak Mundi, Pura Goa Giri Putri, Pura Batu Medawu, Pura Batu Mas Kuning, and Pura Penataran Ped.



1. Pura Puncak Mundi

Pura Puncak Mundi is situated at the peak of Mundi Hill, at Klumpu Village, Nusa Penida. Puncak Mundi Temple is very sacred and highly respected. This temple has rich historical value, full of mystery and of course the spiritual vibration. This place has an altitude of 529 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the island of Nusa Penida. Amazing natural beauty is ready to welcome visitors along with the cool breeze and strong winds.

At the time of temple ceremony (Wednesday / Buda Umanis Prangbakat) many Hindu people come to pray. Hindus usually perform worship in Pura Puncak Mundi first, and then continue to other temples and the last in Penataran Ped Temple.

This holy temple consists of three main temples include: Pura Beji, Pura Dalem Krangkeng, and Pura Puncak Mundi. The first stage of prayer is done in Pura Beji. Then continue to the Pura Dalem Krangkeng (at the south side of Wantilan) and last in the Pura Puncak Mundi (at the west side of Wantilan). The Temple is the stana of Ida Bhatara Lingsir.

2. Pura Goa Giri Putri

Goa Giri Putri temple is situated in the pekraman village of Karang Sari, Suana Village, District of Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali. The word "giri" means hills or mountain. While the "putri" means princess or beautiful woman. Giri Putri is a symbol of the power of God that is motherly and often called Hyang Giri Putri.

While taking a breath, visitors can enjoy the panoramic beauty of the sea, the beach, fishing boats, and also the beautiful Bali mountains. This place is very sacred, highly respected, and full of spiritual vibe.

This temple is located at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level with the cave entrance perched on a high limestone hill. To get there, visitors have to step up the stairs uphill until arrive at the entrance shrine. The cave itself has a length of approximately 310 meters and there are 6 places of worship in it.

The shrine includes pelinggih Hyang Tri Purusa, pelinggih Hyang Wasuki, pelinggih Hyang Giripati, pelinggih Hyang Giri Putri, pelinggih Hyang Siwa Amerta, and pelinggih Sri Sedana / Ratu Syahbandar and Goddess Kwam Im. Overall, this is a fusion concept of holy cave of the Hindu Shiva and Buddhist. Many people came to Pura Giri Putri to pray for safety, prosperity, good fortune, peace and domestic harmony.

3. Pura Batu Medawu

Pura Batu Medawu is located in the eastern peninsula of the island, in Suana Village, District of Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali. This holy temple is part of the three main temples called Pura Tri Purusa of Nusa Penida, includes Pura Puncak Mundi, Pura Batu Medawu and Pura Dalem Ped.

Visitors can enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery, vast sea with blue water, beautiful sunrise and the romantic sunset views. In this temple area there are several coconut trees and also canopy trees. In addition, visitors can also see the islands of Lombok in the distance.

At the time of pujawali (falls on a Wednesday / Buda Kliwon Pahang, every 6 (six) month), many Hindus come to pray and invoke for the guidance of wisdom. This sacred temple consists of three main temples include Pura Segara as a place of the first worship, Pura Taman (the second) and Pura Batu Medawu as a place of the last worship (also called Pura Penataran).

There is uniqueness in Pura Taman which boat-shaped when observed from the side. The name of "Medawu" is come from words "perahu medah batu" or the ship splitting the stone / rock. This word is strongly associated with the story that mentioned in Babad Nusa.

4. Pura Batu Mas Kuning

Pura Batu Mas Kuning is located close to Pura Batu Medawu, on the edge of Semaya Beach. This holy palce is very sacred and highly respected by Hindus. In the area around the temple, there are "gepuh tree" that grow big and tall and also several other big trees. There is also waterway or "Loloan" the path of the flood during the rainy season.

Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the white sand beaches, deep blue sea, seaweed farming, panoramic hills swathed in shades spiritual. The temple anniversary or pujawali is fell on Wednesday / Buda Wage Merakih (every 6 month).

Batu Mas Kuning temple consists of four (4) main temple include Pura Song Babuan (Bale Agung), Pura Song Beten (Pura Segara), Pura Payogan Bhatara Baruna Manunggal Ring Sang Hyang Tiga Sakti and Pura Taman.

5. Pura Penataran Ped

Penataran Ped temple is located in Ped Village on the main road Ped Toyepakeh - Sampalan. Ped Temple has a high historical and spiritual value. This temple is very sacred and highly revered by Hindus. Ped Temple one of the most-visited temple in Nusa Penida.

At the ceremony or "pujawali" many Hindus come to pray at this holy temple. Hindu people come and pray for the safety, tranquility, prosperity and success of their agricultural crops.

The worship is done through several stages. The first prayers in Pura Segara, that is located in the most northern part, close to the shoreline. Pura Segara is the Stana of Ida Batara Baruna as ruler of the seas and oceans. From Pura Segara the worship proceed to Pura Taman (located in the south of Pura Segara), where there is pool of water that circled around the shrine. The third worship carried out at west Pura Taman, the main temple, Pura Penataran Ida Ratu Gde Mecaling. The last prayer is done at the eastern temple which is the Stana of Ida Ratu Mas.

In the area around Penataran Ped temple, there are several small restaurants and stalls that selling prayer purposes. For visitors who plan to visit for a few days, there are also several lodging and small hotels at an affordable price. You can find it in around the temple area, along the main road, in Toyepakeh, and in Sampalan. For transportation, you can rent a scooter and also use a pick-up car (with roof modification).
