1. Crystal Bay.
The sand base in Crystal Bay plated with bommies and soft coral. Some types of fish such as the Napoleon fish, Parrot fish, turtles and eels are inhabit this area. Dive site in Crystal Bay also offers the cleaning station of Mola-Mola. There is an amazing bats cave on this location.

2. Gamat Bay.
A small bay located between Crystal Bay dab Toyapakeh. The sand base is covered by soft corals and corals stagehorn. Pelagic fish and reef fish can be found in large numbers. Always check water conditions before diving here and always be careful with the current changes at the Natural Channel.

3. Toyapakeh.
Coral reefs in Toyapakeh are dominated by acropora in shallow water. There are plenty of reef fish and pelagic fish and even the cleaning station of Mola-Mola. In addition there are also Black Jacks and Sea Turte frequently spotted on this spot.

4. SD (Sekolah Dasar) Point.
This dive site stretches along the coastline. Offers the beauty of a healthy reef, reef fish and pelagics. Reef Shark, Sunfish (Mola-Mola) and even Manta Ray also frequently seen in SD Point.

5. Ped Point.
Conveniently located near Ped Village. This spot has coral reefs mainly colonies of stagehorn coral, coral heads and bommies that stretches from east to west. There are a large number of marine fish, pelagic even sunfish are also frequently seen at this location.

6. Sental Point.
This location has bommies coral reefs and large amount of schooling fusiliers, unicornfishes, snappers, anthias, and ribbon eels. There is also triggerfish and also the cleaning station where divers can see mola mola or sunfish.

7. Buyuk Point.
Having coral formations in the form of huge barrel sponges and long whip corals. The kinds of fish in this location relatively same to the Sental Point. Also often seen Whitetip Reef Shark.

8. Sampalan Point.
Coral reefs in Sampalan Point has compositions in the form of boulder rocks, coral head, and bommies. There is a colorful nudibranch, tropical reef fish and pelagics such as Manta Ray and Eagel Ray.

9. Malibu Point.
Diving can be done along the steep slopes, there are big table corals and bommies. Divers can also see Schooling Fusiliers, Rainbow Runners, Trevallys and Red-Tooth Triggerfish. The divers can see frogfish, nudists, leaf scorpionfish, moray eels and so on. Divers also have the opportunity to see the Mola-Mola, Manta Rays, a wide variety of sharks in Bali including White-tip and Black-tip reef sharks and Thresher sharks.

10. Batu Abah.
There is a stone large enough in comparison to surrounding areas and local people call Batu Abah or "Father of The Rock". Coral formations in Batu Abah has the combination of coral walls, sand, bommies, slopes, hard corals and soft corals. At this location there is Baracudas, Groupers, Surgeonfish, Napoleon, Parrotfish and Triggerfish. All in big size.

11. Manta Point.
The name is derived from the Giant Manta Ray patrols around this point. There are a few boulder-sized rocks. In addition to manta ray, there are also large amounts of tropical fish, emperor fish, scorpion and lion fish, shrimps, eels and nurse sharks.

12. Screet Manta.
Manta Ray is often seen at this location feeding on plankton. The location is also great for snorkeling, seen a lot of holes, cracks and overhangs where divers can see shrimps, crabs and octopus. There is also stingrays.

Holy Temple in Nusa Penida


Nusa Penida Bali is also a home for holy temples. The holy temples include Giri Putri Cave Temple, Pura Batu Medau, Puncak Mundi Temple, Ped Temple Nusa Penida and Pura Batu Mas Kuning.

1. Giri Putri Cave Temple.
The temple is located in Desa Pekraman Karang Sari, Suana Village. To get on the cave entrance the visitor have to step up on stairs stone until arrive on the entrance shrine. The entrance is located on a high limestone hill. The cave entrance is relatively small, declining, winding and only passable for one person. Visitors will walk squatting for a few steps then stand up without a head knock because the cave ceiling become higher.

Once stand up and walk for a while, visitors will see the beautiful scenery inside the cave, the high cave ceiling, wide and broad, hundreds of swallow and bat. In some corners there are stalactites and stalagmites. There are also water droplets collected on container for the purposes of worship.

The conditions inside the cave supported by electricity lamp, cool temperatures and of course spiritual vibe can not be ignored. Inside the temple, there are several shrines where visitors can do the praying. After praying visitor heading towards the exit which has larger size compared the entrance. Near the exit there is shrine which is related to Hindu-Buddhist beliefs.

2. Pura Batu Medau.
The temple is located in Suana Village where beauty have oceans and continents. Visitors come to this temple, praying for the gift of wisdom. The name of medawu came from words "perahu medah batu" or "stone splitting". It's also linked to the ancient manuscript of Nusa Penida. In Pura Batu Medau temple, visitors can witnessed amazing sunrise and sunset with all its beauty.

3. Puncak Mundi Temple.
The temple is located at the peak of Mundi Hill at an altitude of 529 m above sea level. Visitors will cross the road uphill to arrive at this location while the road condition is not so good. Puncak Mundi Temple offers beautiful natural views, cool atmosphere and feel a strong spiritual vibe. At the same location there is also Pura Dalem Krangkeng Temple and also wantilan hall. Before reaching this temple location, visitors will see the facilities of alternative energy such as wind turbines and solar panels.

4. Ped Temple Nusa Penida.
This temple is located in Ped Village on the main road between Toyapakeh and Sampalan. The visitors especially Hindus come and pray in this temple to invoke the safety, well-being and tranquility. This temple has an important spiritual value. Ped Temple Nusa Penida is one of the most-visited tourist attractions.

5. Pura Batu Mas Kuning.
The temple is located close to Pura Batu Medau, on the edge of Semaya Beach. On the area of Pura Batu Mas Kuning temple there are "gepuh" tree that grow big and tall and also a few other big trees. There is also a waterway or "loloan" the path of the flood during the rainy season. One of the shrines here is related to the strandings incidence of "Ulam Agung". This Srhine is called Pura Payogan Bhatara Baruna Manunggal ring Sang Hyang Tiga Sakti. Visitors can also see the beauty of the white sand beaches, blue sea, seaweed farming, panoramic hills swathed in spiritual shades.

There is an unique tradition held in Pura Batu Mas Kuning Temple. This tradition is called "Nimpung" or "Nimpug". This tradition is an expression of gratitude over the abundance of grace from the Creator and held by the local community. Nimpung or Nimpug means "throw". This tradition has become an unique attraction to visitors.

Local People in Nusa Penida

Local residents in Nusa Penida is predominantly Hindu, using the local language (Bahasa Bali) and Bahasa Indonesian. English has been widely used.

Locals work in agriculture and trade sectors. Farming is done on dry land that relies on rainwater. Locals trades at the center of crowds and also traditional markets.

Nusa Penida Bali has unique activity and became the main livelihood of locals, a seaweed cultivation. The farmer planting the seaweed, tending and harvesting it with rowboat. Then the seaweed was dried under sunlight and sold to collectors.

There are another unique of locals skill in a form of weaving called "Tenun Cepuk" in Tanglad Village and "Tenun Cepuk Rangrang" in Pejukutan Village.

Getting to Nusa Penida from Bali

Access to Nusa Penida Bali can be done via Padang Bai, Kusamba, Benoa Harbour, Sanur and Nusa Lembongan.

Padang Bai. Visitors can use daily public ferry or rent a speed boat with a capacity of 20 people.

Kusamba. Visitors can use a boat with a capacity of 45 people from Kusamba. This location is close to attractions Pura Goa Lawah.

Benoa Harbour. Visitors can use the services of Quicksilver Cruise which departs daily from Benoa Harbour to the large pontoon that float in Toyapakeh Beach at western side of Penida Island.

Sanur. Visitors can use the services of a speed boat with a capacity of 45 people such as CASPLA Bali Boat, Maruti Express, and Mola-Mola Express.

Nusa Lembongan. Conveniently located near the suspension bridge which connecting Lembongan Island and Ceningan Island. Visitors can use the public boat that departs daily or rent a private boat.

Geographic Conditions of Nusa Penida

Climate and Soil. Nusa Penida Bali was included in the category "somewhat dry climate" (based on climate classification map by Schmidt-Ferguson). Humid season starts from December to April.

Savanna forest is the typical vegetation on the island. The soil in this area is derived from Selatan Formation which consisted of reef limestone, marl in place, partly bedded, recrytallized and fossiliferous.

Topography. This island has a topography which ramps up the hilly. Gently sloping topography in the coastal areas to the hilly region at the central part of the island.

The highest point is located in Klumpu Village namely Bukit Mundi with an altitude of 529 m above sea level.

Bathymetry. Conditions in the waters of Nusa Penida is surrounded by the deep sea. The sea around this island has a high degree of slope, especially at the northern part (Ped Village, Batununggul, Kutampi Kaler, Suana) and the western part (Toyapakeh Village and Sakti).

While the eastern part (Village Pejukutan and Tanglad) and southern (Desa Sekartaji, Batukandik, Batu Madeg, and Bunga Mekar) have a level of more gentle slope.

Hydrology. The condition of water resources on the island in the form of "rivers" that flows only during the rainy season. This water resources can not be used to meet the needs of clean water and agricultural irrigation. Water resources in the form of "springs" that are identified as having a relatively large discharge is Mata Air Penida (Sakti Village) and Mata Air Peguyangan (Batukandik Village).

Coastal. The beach is dominated by coastal cliffs scattered on the eastern side, the south and west of the island. While the northern part is a gently sloping beach. White sandy beaches, ramps and fortified by the extending coral reefs at the northern part such as Toyapakeh Village, Ped, Kutampi Kaler, Batununggul, Suana, and Pejukutan.

Coastal Ecosystem in Nusa Penida

The coastal ecosystem serve as a transitional between terrestrial ecosystems and the marine ecosystem. It has a diverse ecosystem of significant value in ecological, social and economic. The main of coastal ecosystem include mangrove areas, coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Coral reef ecosystems are scattered around the beach area and also at the western part of Nusa Penida in the form of a deep natural channel. Seagrass ecosystems was found only in narrow area around Ped Village and Suana. There's no mangrove area on this island but there is on Nusa Lembongan.

Visitor Activities

Eat. Visitors can buy food at the foodstalls or "warung" along the roads of Toyapakeh up to Sampalan. In the evening the food vending stalls clustered around Sampalan and Pasar Umum Mentigi.

Sleep. There are several inns and bungalows along the road of Toyapakeh up to Sampalan. Visitors come and booking the room directly on location.

Money and Buy. There are an ATM BRI in Sampalan, but it advisable to bring enough money. Given the condition of the island are dry and hot, visitors can use sun-block. In Sampalan there is a big store and provide more complete services. A large enough traditional market is also available here called Pasar Umum Mentigi.

Get Around. To get around visitors can rent a motorbike or scooters in Toyepakeh and Sampalan. The narrow road and not so good conditions make visitor need to pay attention to other road users. Some parts of road is damaged and potholes.

Visitors can buy petrol at "warung" or kiosk because the SPBU station is always out of stock. Check the condition and keep the rental providers identity or phone number if necessary.

Nusa Penida is located just off the coast and separated with Bali mainland by Badung Strait . Administratively, this island is located in the District of Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali.

Among the three islands in the administrative region of the District of Nusa Penida, Penida Island is the largest. Two other islands are Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

1. Beaches
Visitors who come to Nusa Penida Bali will be spoiled by the flat-type beaches and white sand along the northern side of the island start from Toyapakeh Village up to Suana. The beaches include Penida Bay or Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Toyapakeh Beach, Batu Nunggul Beach, Pasir Uwug (Brokken Beach), Atuh Beach, Suana Beach, Batu Abah, Karang Dawa, etc.

2. Nature and Agro

4. Sebuluh Waterfall or Seganing Waterfall
Sebuluh Waterfall or Seganing Waterfall is very impressive, especially during the rainy season. The waterfall is situated at Batu Madeg Village. The waterfall is located at the bottom of steep cliff and can be access with carved stone steps on the wall of limestone cliff. The narrow stone steps become slippery after rain and visitor need to be very careful.

5. Tembeling Waterfall Nusa Penida
Tembeling Waterfall Nusa Penida is located in Batu Madeg Village. This place is situated in trees and scrub bush in the forest of Tembeling. Tembeling Waterfall or Natural Pool is located beside the high cliffs and near from the beach. There are separated swimming pool for men and women pool. Tembeling Waterfall or Natural Pool has a spiritual value, highly respected and sacred by locals. Grove of trees, atmosphere near the beach and amazing birdsong create a sense of calmness and coolness of Tembeling Waterfall Nusa Penida.

6. Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida
Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida is situated in cliff edge and can be reached by the stairs available. At the wall side there is a pipe used to drain the water from the spring and distributed to the locals. The water is very clear and visitors can enjoy a direct view to the blue ocean. Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida is located in Batukandik Village.

7. Karang Dawa Nusa Penida or Paluang
Karang Dawa Nusa Penida or Paluang is located in Bunga Mekar Village. A stunning views of cliffs stretching to the sea and divides the coast. The coast on the right side is called Kelingking Beach and and the other side is called Karang Dawa Beach. The beach is situated at the bottom of the high cliffs and not too broad.

The beautiful white sand fused with blue ocean panoramic, green grass on the hill, and the breeze truly enchanting panorama to the visitors though this experience can only be enjoyed from the cliff top. This is because the cliff at Karang Dawa Nusa Penida is very high and there is no access to the bottom of the cliff to reach the white sand.

8. Pura Paluang Nusa Penida
There's an unique temple located close to Karang Dawa Cliff and thick with spiritual vibe. The temple is called Pura Paluang. Pura Paluang Nusa Penida is situated above the high cliff, surrounded by trees and there hundreds of monkey inhabit around the temple.

In Pura Paluang temple there are two car-shaped shrines. This car-shaped shrines is made of stones and cement. Formerly, the two car-shaped shrines is made of wood.

9 Bird Sanctuary
Nusa Penida and two other islands, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are bird protection area. The area is managed by Begawan Giri Foundation colaborate with Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) and supported by the local community.

Local communities have incorporated this protection regulations into "awig-awig" or village regulations and also set sanctions. Local Community cooperate with the authorities to fight illicit trade. Bali Starling, White Cockatoo, and other bird species are protected here.

10. Fishing.
Nusa Penida Bali has several fishing spots of Pelagic and Dimersal especially at the Eastern and Southern part of this island. The location is a destination for lovers of Sport Fishing such as Batu Abah (Pejukutan Village ) Tanjung Bakubg (Sekartaji Village ), and Tanjung Sakti (Sakti Village).

Types of fish that offers a challenge for the angler include Scad Fish, Yellowfin Tuna and Groupers.

11. Recreation and Water Sports
Recreational activities and water sports can also be done here. This activities are based in Toyapakeh Village, the western part of this island. The recreation and water sport are based on a pontoon and cruise ships. The activities offered by Quicksilver Boat and The Ponton includes swimming, water slide, canoeing, banana boat and semi-submarine.

12. Ocean Rafting
Ocean Rafting typically use a high-speed cruise. This activity usually visited the spot in Southern Beach of Nusa Penida Bali with panoramic of limestone cliffs. Visitors will be invited to enjoy the views of the bay, swimming, snorkeling and beachcombing. Visitors have the chance to see manta rays, whales and dolphins.
